Just a typical day. A young girl is walking down the side walk. Her hips gently swaying from side to side with each step. A man makes the comment, "Can you believe she's swinging her hips like that? She's just asking for it."
Our society condemns women who move as god created them. We shame young girls into minimizing their pelvic movement because its considered unnecessary, distracting or attracts the wrong attention and this mentality is leading young girls to become women who have locked up their hips. This is why so many women now suffer from chronic low back pain. I was working on a young girl who was finishing up high school. Her upper back was locked from the weight of the world being dumped on her shoulders (never being taught ways to let stress slide off the back). Her hips were locked, incredibly locked, caused from sitting all day at school & walking without proper pelvic movement. Her low back, though, felt under-developed while her QL and Psoas was gripped so tightly that even resting was uncomfortable until we did some trigger point and myofascial release.
Lets have a conversation about female vs male pelvis and femur alignment.
Our hips are wider than males so our femurs (thigh bones) come in at a greater angle. When we step our pelvis swings to adjust for the angle. Who know when we learn it, but at some point girls learn to lock their pelvic bones, to stop the natural sway. As a result our muscles get stuck, they stop developing and we get tight, underdeveloped low back muscles. We literally cant support ourselves because we are too concerned with what others expect and need from us. Here is a video fromDr. Deborah Kern. I share this with ALL my clients, guys and gals because guys are never taught to move their hips and they too suffer. This pavanmuktasana series helps to open all the joints of the body including the hips. It's less than 10 minutes & I like to do it first thing in the morning. Try it, let me know how it's working for you. If you are still suffering from low back discomfort, book a massage or a private yoga therapy session & we can do some personalized work.
